After Warhammer 40,000, Amazon May Create Create a Warhammer Fantasy Cinematic Universe Next
Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
Buried within Games Workshop’s announcement that Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 Cinematic Universe is “now properly rolling” is a tantalising tease that a Warhammer Fantasy Cinematic Universe could be next.
Games Workshop publishes two flagship tabletop wargames: the grimdark sci-fi Warhammer 40,000, and the fantasy Warhammer. Where 40,000 is made up of Space Marines, Eldar, Chaos Marines, and Tyranids, Warhammer fantasy races include the Realms of Men, Elves, Chaos, and Dwarfs. Warhammer is the setting for video games such as Creative Assembly’s Total War: Warhammer series and Fatshark’s Warhammer Vermintide games, among many others.
“Under the terms of the agreement, Games Workshop has granted exclusive rights to Amazon in relation to films and television series set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe, together with an option for Amazon to license equivalent rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe following the release of the initial Warhammer 40,000 production,” Games Workshop’s announcement read.
With Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 project still years away, a potential Warhammer fantasy TV show or film is even further out. But it’s good to know Warhammer is at the very least in the mix.
For now, Games Workshop and Amazon have said they will work together for 12 months “to agree creative guidelines for the films and television series to be developed by Amazon”.
The agreement will only proceed once the creative guidelines are mutually agreed between Games Workshop and Amazon. Henry Cavill, famously a big fan of Warhammer 40,000, is heavily involved, and is set to star in whatever Amazon ends up making.
