Until Dawn Film Adaptation Gets 2025 Release Date

Just about a week after director David F. Sandberg revealed that it had completed filming, Sony Pictures has announced the release date for its Until Dawn movie.

Until Dawn, Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions’ adaptation of the beloved PlayStation 4 game, will hit theaters on April 25, 2025. That puts it just a few months ahead of the game’s 10th anniversary, having launched in August 2015. As for its competition at the box office, the road looks pretty clear; the only other movie set for that date is Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2.

As previously revealed, Until Dawn’s got some strong horror talent behind the scenes. Gary Dauberman (Annabelle, The Nun, It, It: Chapter Two) wrote the latest version of the script, with Blair Butler having penned the previous draft. Sandberg is known for horror movies like Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, as well as DC’s Shazam! and its sequel.

We’ve also been told the film should be an R-rated affair, as well as a “terrifying love letter to the horror genre.” It stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Odessa A’zion, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare (reprising his role from the game as Dr. Hill).

Sony hasn’t revealed too many plot details about Until Dawn quite yet, other than the fact that it’s inspired by the events of the game. Until Dawn is basically a choose-your-own adventure horror game, where eight terrified teens live or die based on the player’s decisions, so it’ll be interesting to see if that’s reflected in the film at all.

Until Dawn has moved surprisingly quickly since its announcement this past January, and it’s only one of a number of big video game adaptations in the pipeline. For more on that, check out our breakdown of every upcoming video game film and TV show.
