Paramount Pictures has delayed the first of the three planned Avatar: The Last Airbender animated films, what’s currently being called Aang: The Last Airbender, to 2026.
It’s also pushed back Transformers One, which debuted its first trailer today, just a week to September 20, 2024.
The Avatar spin-off film, which was originally slated to release on October 10, 2025, will instead release on January 20, 2026, IGN has confirmed with Paramount. This three-month delay comes a week after the studio revealed more details on the movie at Cinemacon 2024, where it seemed to be on track for the October 2025 release date at the time. Lauren Montgomery, storyboard artist for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3 and The Legend of Korra, is set to direct the film with series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko serving as executive producers.
While little is known about the plot of Aang: The Last Airbender other than that it follows the adventures of an adult Aang after the events of the original hit Nickelodeon show, Paramount did shed some light on the film’s cast. At Cinemacon 2024, Paramount revealed that singer Eric Nam will play Aang and Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista will play a villain in the film. Paramount also unveiled that actors Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten, and Román Zaragoza will be involved in the film as well, although their roles have yet to be revealed.
Aang: The Last Airbender was first announced in 2021 as a part of Avatar Studios, a Nickelodeon studio dedicated solely to expanding Avatar’s mythos with new original shows and films. The studio is headed by DiMartino and Konietzko, who famously cut ties with the Netflix live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series in 2020 due to creative differences.
