To dive deeper into the trailer, check out our interview with Fede Alvarez here.

The first trailer for Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus prompted fans to re-evaluate two of the franchise’s most divisive entries: 2012’s Prometheus and 2017’s Alien: Covenant.

The brief one-minute teaser of the upcoming Alien: Romulus offered fans a first look at the next entry in the iconic horror franchise, including a glimpse of the blood-splattered space station where the action unfolds, an entire horde of Facehuggers, and a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance from a monstrous Xenomorph.

20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell took to X/Twitter following the trailer’s release to acknowledge some of the surprise reactions to it, writing: “I did not expect our Romulus teaser launch would also spark what appears to be an impromptu re-evaluation of Prometheus and Covenant, but, well, gosh.”

Shortly after the Romulus trailer dropped online, people turned their attention to the two previous Alien entries. Prometheus and Covenant divided fans upon their release; however, the comments that followed the Romulus trailer were resoundingly positive, with people showing their love and appreciation for the Ridley Scott prequels.

I am a lover of Prometheus & Covenant

i honestly don’t think liking Prometheus (or Alien Covenant) should even be an unpopular opinion at this point. they’re thrilling Ridley Scott sci fi movies with intelligent ideas and hardcore action horror. in any year they’d be in the top of genre for me. terrific films https://t.co/uI5IEFP3SJ

Love PROMETHEUS. Always have. I shall brook no quarter on it.

ALIEN: COVENANT is also hugely hugely underrated. I’m delighted the new film ROMULUS is considering them both canon. https://t.co/nVyKcsBf8H

Prometheus & Alien: Covenant are both excellent films.

I’ve said this before that I liked Prometheus and Covenant and I’d still like to see a 3rd David film on top of what we are already getting with Romulus. I know a lot of folks didn’t like Covenant but I found that part of the franchise very interesting. pic.twitter.com/nbtg3sLaCJ

Very very VERY excited for Alien: Romulus but I want the record to show that I am and always will be a Prometheus/Covenant defender and I refuse to leave this Earth until we finally see what happens to David pic.twitter.com/2xHZoxkOCi

Both have been misunderstood, glad this was an excuse for fans to express how much they liked the previous 2 films—hope to rewatch them sometime before Romulus

Absolutely loved those movies. Glad to see they’re finally getting the love they deserve.

Scott, who directed the original 1979 film that kicked off the beloved sci-fi franchise and helmed the fifth and sixth installments, returned as a producer on Alien: Romulus. He has already watched the director’s cut of Romulus and given his endorsement, commending Alvarez for co-writing and directing a “f**king great” entry.

The newest film takes place between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), but yet it is its own contained story. One that, according to its synopsis, follows “a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe,” with Cailee Spaeny leading the cast.

Alien: Romulus will hit theaters on August 16, 2024.
