Analogue Pocket Competitor Tries To Be A Tribute To Game Boy

2024 marks the 35th anniversary of Nintendo’s Game Boy, and it remains one of the most influential and popular handhelds of all time. In 2021, the Analogue Pocket was launched as a way to give modern gamers a new option to play their Game Boy games as well as games from other discontinued handhelds. Now, Analogue Pocket has a new competitor in the form of ModRetro’s The Chromatic, and it may be even more enticing to Game Boy fans.

Game Boy was bundled with Tetris at its launch, so it’s only fitting that The Chromatic will also be launching with Tetris included. Tetris is just one of the new Chromatic Game Boy carts launching alongside the handheld. Though the carts are designed with the Chromatic in mind, they will work with original Game Boy hardware. Additionally, all original Game Boy and GBC cartridges are supported.

ModRetro also went out of its way to pay tribute to the original Game Boy and its successor with a custom 2.6-inch LCD screen that has “identical pixel structure, identical layout, identical resolution, and size to the Game Boy Color,” according to the accompanying video. Even the colors are accurate to the way they were displayed on the Game Boy Color. The Chromatic’s sapphire crystal glass screen is designed to be resistant to scratches.
