A big return

Marvel has only one movie in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine, but the MCU ramps back up in 2025 and beyond. One of the next major films in the series is The Avengers: Doomsday. During San Diego Comic-Con recently, Marvel revealed the film’s title and several other key pieces of information, including the biggest news of all: Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU.

But the actor is not coming back to play Tony Stark/Iron Man as some believed he might. Instead, it was confirmed that the Oscar-winner will play the villain Victor von Doom AKA Doctor Doom. We’ve also learned that MCU veterans Joe and Anthony Russo are coming back to direct Doomsday and its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars.

As many may recall, Marvel originally planned for this movie to be The Avengers: Kang Dynasty, featuring Jonathan Majors playing the villain. But Marvel shifted gears significantly after Majors’ legal issues, and what arose from that is Doomsday.

In this gallery, we’re running through everything we know so far about Doomsday, including the release date, cast so far, story speculation, and more.

What is The Avengers: Doomsday about?

Plot details for Doomsday are being kept under wraps for now. In the Ultimate Comics: Doomsday comic, members of The Fantastic Four teamed up with Marvel heroes to take on Doctor Doom. Whether or not the film will follow this storyline, however, is unknown. At Comic-Con, it was confirmed that members of the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts will appear in both Doomsday and Secret Wars. So that means you can expect to see people like Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards and Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, along with Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova and David Harbour as Red Guardian, among others. We’ll report back when Marvel shares official story details for Doomsday.

When is The Avengers: Doomsday coming out?

Doomsday is penciled in for release in theaters in May 2026. Filming is expected to begin in early 2025 in London, according to Variety. MCU movies typically shoot out of a home base in Atlanta, Georgia, but production is said to be shifting to London for Doomsday.

Who’s going to be in The Avengers: Doomsday?

Robert Downey Jr. is confirmed to appear as Doctor Doom. He’s reportedly getting a massive payday in the area of $80 million+ to appear in Doomsday and Secret Wars. In addition, members of the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts are set to show up, which means we could see characters like Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm appear, along with Buckey Barnes, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Taskmaster, Ghost, and Valentine Allegra de Fontaine in some capacity. The full cast has yet to be revealed.

Is there a trailer for The Avengers: Doomsday?

There is no trailer yet for The Avengers: Doomsday. As mentioned, filming isn’t expected to begin until early 2025, so no one should expect footage anytime soon. Fans can more reasonably expect Marvel to focus on promoting the next MCU movies, including Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in 2025.

Who’s directing The Avengers: Doomsday?

Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo are returning to the MCU to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. The brothers directed Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. According to Variety, the Russo brothers will produce the movies through their AGBO banner, which is a change for Marvel–the company doesn’t usually produce its big superhero movies via outside companies like that. The report also stated that Downey Jr. only agreed to return to the MCU if the Russo brothers directed. Finally, sources told Variety that the Russo brothers are getting $80 million to make Doomsday and Secret Wars, along with performance-based incentives for box office results at $750 million and $1 billion, should the films reach those thresholds.
