Blumhouse Teases Horror Movie Imaginary With Mysterious, Nearly Audio-Only Trailer Ahead of FNAF

Those opting to see Five Nights at Freddy’s in theaters this weekend may be greeted with a mysterious, nearly visual-free trailer for an upcoming Blumhouse horror flick.

The trailer, for the film Imaginary, appropriately beckons theater-goers to “close your eyes and use your imagination” before airing around 50 seconds of audio over a black screen. IGN understands that the trailer is only showing in theaters and we’re not sure if it’ll be released online, so here’s a brief rundown of what happens:

We hear a little girl counting to 20 before declaring “here I come!” She’s met, however, by a door opening and thundering footsteps. As we hear the girl seemingly investigate further, there’s also the sound of some creepy, music box-like music playing, with mysterious voices murmuring.

It’s not completely devoid of visuals, however. After the girl, who is seemingly named Alice, instructs the audience to “open your eyes,” we get some blink-and-you-miss-it glimpses of the girl screaming, along with a couple of women in fear and a very quick look at a towering monster seemingly making its way through a hallway.

It’s a very quick little bit of marketing, but an interesting gimmick nonetheless. We know very little about Imaginary currently, but Deadline reported back in February that it’ll be directed by Kick-Ass 2 and The Curse of Bridge Hollow’s Jeff Wadlow. According to the synopsis on Deadline, it’ll follow a young woman who “returns to her childhood home only to discover that the imaginary friend she left behind is very real and very unhappy she left.”

It’s set for release on Feb. 2, 2024.

It’s also an extra surprise for those who head out to see Blumhouse’s latest, Five Nights at Freddy’s, in theaters instead of catching it on Peacock, since it’s also debuting day-and-date on that streaming platform today.
