Cable Actor Josh Brolin Breaks Silence on Whether He’s Returning for Deadpool & Wolverine

MCU veteran Josh Brolin has played it coy over whether Cable will show up in Deadpool & Wolverine, adding even more ambiguity to his cameo chances.

During a recent interview, Collider asked Brolin outright whether he appears in Deadpool & Wolverine and, if not, why, to which he responded: “No. I don’t know.” He jokingly suggested: “Because Ryan [Reynolds] doesn’t like me? I don’t know.” He took a moment to pause, looked directly at the camera and declared: “Maybe.”

The first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine featured several familiar faces as well as a possible sighting of Doctor Doom, but a few characters were notably absent. Domino actress Zazie Beet has already made it clear she isn’t returning, but some fans were surprised Cable was missing from the guest list for Wade Wilson’s birthday.

“Would be a little weird if he wasn’t there,” one person said on Reddit, while another added: “I think he’s crucial to the plot since he’s the one who let Wade do all that time travel stuff.” A third person predicted he will “show up in the post-credit scene,” and someone else thought there could be “a gag scene with Cable and Thanos.”

Brolin is one of a handful of actors to portray characters for both the MCU and Fox’s X-Men universe, though he previously revealed his Cable appearance in Deadpool 2 was a much more difficult experience than playing Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, referring to the former as “a business transaction.”

Deadpool & Wolverine will be one of the first Marvel projects to truly tackle the emergence of X-Men characters in the MCU. The Merc with a Mouth’s two previous movies existed before Disney finalized its purchase of 21st Century Fox, meaning the third film has the opportunity to play with universe crossovers.

Aaron Stanford, who played Pyro in the original X-Men franchise, is reprising his role in the new film. Jennifer Garner is also returning to her roots as Elektra, a character she last played 19 years ago in the self-titled 2005 movie, while leaked set photos from Deadpool & Wolverine seemingly confirmed another major return.

The third Deadpool film releases in theaters on July 26 as part of Phase 5 of the MCU, and it looks to be setting up Avengers: Secret Wars. Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as Deadpool, with Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine, though this time he is wearing his fan-favorite yellow and blue costume made famous by the X-Men comics.
