Deadpool & Wolverine Actor Calls Their Surprise MCU Cameo a ‘Dream Come True’

Warning: spoilers follow for Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine is chock full of superhero cameos, but one of the biggest surprises came from an MCU veteran.

In a great bait and switch, Chris Evans showed up in Deadpool & Wolverine, but not as Captain America; this time, he stepped out as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, after a 17-year hiatus from the role he portrayed in 2005’s Fantastic Four and its sequel, 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Evans took to his Instagram story to extend his gratitude to Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy and the movie’s titular stars, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, for allowing him to reprise the superhero character. He also posted a behind-the-scenes photo with the trio on the set of the MCU production.

“Thank you to Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy for letting me be a part of such an incredible movie!” Evans wrote. “They’re three of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Special thank you to Ryan for making it all happen. Playing Johnny again was a dream come true and he’ll always have a special place in my heart.”

Evans is just one of many guest appearances in Deadpool & Wolverine, joining several other actors making Fox movie cameos, including Jennifer Garner’s Elektra and Wesley Snipes’ Blade. Not forgetting Channing Tatum’s turn as Gambit (a role he previously got cast in but never actually got to play until now).

Tatum recently shared his own social media post to show his appreciation for his MCU debut. The actor posted two near-identical photos of him and Reynolds standing side-by-side at San Diego Comic-Con, taken nearly 10 years apart, and thanked his co-star for making the cameo happen, saying he owes him “forever.”

Deadpool & Wolverine premiered on July 26 to the largest R-rated global box office opening ever, pulling in a staggering $438.3 million and the eighth-biggest domestic weekend box office debut of all time, with ticket sales reaching $205 million.

IGN’s review of Deadpool & Wolverine called the MCU blockbuster “an outrageous, consistently funny superhero comedy that succeeds largely thanks to the contagious enthusiasm of leads Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and a surprisingly classy perspective on superhero movie history.” But it left us with some questions.
