Dune, one of the biggest day-and-date releases to hit HBO Max (now simply known as Max) in 2021, is now arriving on Netflix as well.
And it’s coming pretty soon, with Netflix announcing in a post on X/Twitter today that it’ll hit the streaming service on Oct. 1. It’s currently unclear if it’ll only be released on Netflix U.S. or in other international territories.

It’s only the latest development for Dune, which has a fairly unusual streaming history. Back in 2020, it was one of several films – including Mortal Kombat, The Suicide Squad, Godzilla vs. Kong, and The Matrix Resurrections – to be placed at the center of an industry-shaking move. Amid the COVID-19 lockdown, Warner Bros. revealed that its entire 2021 slate would debut on HBO Max on the same day that the movie was released in theaters.
While the movies would originally only be available for a month on HBO Max before becoming theatrical exclusives and then moving to home entertainment, they eventually returned to HBO Max for good (we know, it got confusing).
So, in short, Dune is still available on Max and will soon hit Netflix – likely a bid to get more eyes on the Denis Villeneuve epic before the sequel comes out.
Speaking of that sequel, this news comes just a couple weeks after Warner Bros. pushed back Dune: Part 2 from Nov. 3, 2023, to March 15, 2024. It was set to be one of the biggest releases of the fall, but WB delayed it amid the ongoing Hollywood actors’ strike, likely because stars like Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya wouldn’t be able to hit the press circuit if the strike is still ongoing.
