Fans Are Speculating That a Spider-Verse Game Is in Development Based on Sony Leaks

Unconfirmed information related to a potential Spider-Man Spider-Verse game, which may have leaked as a result of the recent Insomniac Games data breach, has found its way to the internet, and fans are diving head-first into theories about what it all means.

We want to be absolutely clear up front: the leaks here are thin, and don’t confirm anything (IGN has reached out to Sony for comment), but they’ve intensified fan speculation nonetheless.

Pictures related to a potential video game version of Sony Pictures’ hit Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse films were spotted and shared by Reddit user sut345 in a since-deleted post. The images are blurry at best, with one showing little more than text on a white backdrop with references to things like “Miles,” “RCE,” and “SM3.” What RCE means is a mystery, though SM3 likely refers to Spider-Man 3. Considering Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s success, a third game in the series would be anything but a surprise.

Another image appears to contain the text, “additional support for Spider-Verse.” We’ve heard no official word from Insomniac or Sony regarding a Spider-Verse-related game, so if the information is real, the possibilities about a universe crossover spinoff are truly endless. That said, these images give us little to speculate on and could very well be fake, so don’t go expecting to swing around as various Spider-People yet.

Spinning a Web of Theories

Spoilers for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The images are likely attracting extra attention because Insomniac’s Spider-Man has made an appearance in Across the Spider-Verse earlier this year. Moreover, those who play deep enough into Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 might have come across a familiar Spider-Verse portal and even a mention of Across the Spider-Verse’s Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O’Hara. It’s far from confirmation that Insomniac is planning to create its own Spider-Man crossover experience, but it’s at least interesting to consider.

Reddit users, like AGSE21, have their own theories about the supposed leak, as they suggest the mention could relate to “additional DLC to tie-in for the next Spider-Verse film.”

“They might be referring to a lot of things as Spider-Verse tbh,” sut345 replied. “Maybe it’s just the Spider-Verse related content in the game or the guy worked on one of the Spider-Verse movies. What makes me think it’s a game is that it looks like they only listed games in the first picture.”

User poklane theorizes that the Spider-Verse reference could be Insomniac’s unannounced multiplayer project. They add, “I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Insomniac’s multiplayer game is a Spider-Verse game where you get to create your own Spider character.”

Meanwhile, Insomniac has had its hands full with other projects we already know about. This includes Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which launched only around a month and a half ago on October 20, as well as the secretive Wolverine game. The latter was also subjected to the data leak, with images related to the un-released spinoff allegedly floating around the internet.

Without confirmation from Sony or Insomniac, it’s best fans take today’s “leaked documents” with a massive grain of salt.
