Glen Powell Says ‘I Have a Date’ for Top Gun: Maverick Sequel

Twisters star Glen Powell has indicated that a Top Gun: Maverick sequel could be moving quickly.

Powell let the news slip during an interview with Josh Horowitz, with the moment happening during the final question in the video. When the actor and his Twisters co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones are asked if a Normal People continuation or Top Gun sequel is closer to release, he plainly says, “I mean, I have a date.” When pressed on if he has any additional information to share, Powell smiles and says, “Absolutely not.”

This is perhaps the most official confirmation that a Top Gun: Maverick sequel is in the works we’ve gotten thus far. Powell, who appeared as Jake Seresin (a.k.a. Hangman) in the 2022 film, was said to be eyed to return in a Puck News report earlier this year. The same report says that Paramount Pictures is working on bringing the sequel to life with the hope that Tom Cruise and Miles Teller will team up again, too.

Powell seems to have confirmed that he, at least, will be back for whatever Top Gun 3 turns out to be. While Paramount has played coy about a potential continuation for the adrenaline-fueled franchise, it would not be much of a surprise to see Top Gun take to the skies once again. Top Gun: Maverick is currently the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time, as it managed to pull in a worldwide total of just under $1.5 billion during its theatrical run. It was a commercial and critical success that saw IGN readers voting it as Cruise’s best movie.

Readers should note that for now, at least, no Top Gun 3 release date has been revealed.

We enjoyed the long-awaited 2022 Top Gun sequel, too, giving it a 7/10 in our review. At the time of its release, we said, “Maverick is back to his old tricks in Top Gun: Maverick, which flies higher as a sequel that delivers spectacular action with an afterburner punch.”
