Ikumi Nakamura Just Unveiled Her Independent Project: Kemuri | Game Awards 2023

The ever-delightful Ikumi Nakamura took the stage at The Game Awards this evening to reveal her first independent project since she left Tango Gameworks: it’s called Kemuri, and we don’t know much about it, but the art style is gorgeous.

A brief teaser for Kemuri showed a setting in something like a futuristic Japanese metropolis, where a team of presumably heroes using a mix of futuristic tech and manual weapons appear to be on the hunt for strange, hidden creatures to fight. This ties into the tagline Nakamura reiterated throughout her speech: it’s all about “seeing the unseen.”

That’s about all we know about Kemuri for now. Game Awards host Geoff Keighley indicated that Nakamura doesn’t even have a publisher for it yet, so it’s likely very, very early in development still. We’ll have to keep an eye on Nakamura’s “Unseen” studio for more information.
