James Gunn Wants Margot Robbie to Return to DC, as Harley Quinn or Another Character

DC Studios co-CEO James Gun wants Margot Robbie to return to the franchise as her iconic Harley Quinn or another character completely.

Days after Robbie was asked what she thought of Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, where she said she always wanted to pass the character on to other actresses, Gunn said on Threads he’d “love to work with her again”.

He has no one else in mind to play Harley Quinn in his upcoming DC Universe franchise at the moment, and Gunn has already brought Robbie back once in the rebooted Suicide Squad film in 2021, The Suicide Squad.

“I haven’t talked to Margot about Harley for a long time,” Gunn said. “But I’d love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else. There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley. I mean, other than in [Joker: Folie à Deux] or the animated shows.”

Robbie didn’t dismiss the idea of play Harley Quinn again herself, even though she hopes other actresses will take on the role too. “I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters,” Robbie said. “Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”

Thanks to DC Studios fully embracing the multiverse aspect of comics, where various different versions of Batman and other heroes can appear in different media at the same time, Robbie can certainly embrace the best of both worlds with her hopes for the character.

Harley Quinn isn’t confirmed to feature in the first chapter of the DCU, titled Gods and Monsters, just yet, though there are several DC characters appearing in films where they’re not the headlining act. Superman: Legacy, for example, also stars Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and more.

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He’ll talk about The Witcher all day.
