Jennifer Coolidge Joins Jason Momoa, Jack Black in Minecraft Movie

Today in “news that I did not have on my 2024 bingo card but that I’m absolutely delighted to see,” Emmy-winner Jennifer Coolidge has joined the Minecraft movie.

Deadline first reported the news on Wednesday, which IGN has confirmed with Warner Bros. It’s currently unclear who she’ll be playing, but I’m willing to bet whatever the role is will take full advantage of Coolidge’s kooky charm.

Coolidge joins Jason Momoa, who’s been rumored to star, as well as Jack Black, reportedly playing Steve (Black has least confirmed he’s in the movie with a cheeky Instagram post earlier this month). Other cast members include Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.

Coolidge came to fame in the early ’00s with memorable roles in movies like the American Pie series, Legally Blonde, and Best in Show. She’s had quite the career resurgence as of late, thanks in large part to her role in The White Lotus. After being a highlight in Season 1, she was one of two (along with Jon Cries) cast members to return for the second season, and she now boasts Emmy wins for both.

Coolidge’s casting is only the latest development as we learn more and more about the Minecraft movie, which has been in the works since 2014. It finally seems to be ramping up, however, as video game adaptations reach a fever pitch, especially after the successes of films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie (which also starred Black) and TV shows like The Last of Us.

Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre’s Jared Hess is directing Minecraft, which began filming in December. It’s set to release on April 4, 2025.
