Joel McHale Says Community Movie Will Shoot in 2024

The Community movie is expected to start filming in 2024, star Joel McHale has said, with Peacock working around Donald Glover’s schedule to get it going.

Speaking to Deadline, McHale said he’d be “shocked” if the highly anticipated film doesn’t shoot this year. “I really do think it’s happening this year, and probably next week,” he said. “It’s basically working around Donald’s schedule.”

Glover is perhaps the most successful member, if not the busiest, of the original Community cast, which also includes Alison Brie, Ken Jeong, Chevy Chase, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Gillian Jacobs. He starred in Solo: A Star Wars Story (and is set to appear in a spin-off show) and has a prominent music career as Childish Gambino.

The Community movie has faded in and out of Hollywood consciousness over the past several years, though Glover said in February 2024 the cast now just has scheduling conflicts to contend with. He’s “all in” if they can make it work, however, and with Peacock deliberately working around his schedule, it appears they can.

Creator Dan Harmon said later that month that the script is “almost done”, but previously expressed concern about the film getting scrapped altogether. McHale said in January 2023 the movie was due to begin filming that summer, but the dual writer and actor strikes shut those plans down.

Things seem hopeful once more, however, though Peacock is yet to make an announcement regarding the start of filming.

Fans have held out hope for a Community film ever since Pudi’s Abed Nadir said the now famous line: “Six seasons and a movie.” The six seasons of Community wrapped in 2015, and while a film seemed increasingly unlikely as time went on, Peacock made the surprise order for it in September 2022.
