Kit Harington Didn’t Join the MCU For an Interesting or Different Role: ‘If Marvel Calls, You Gotta Do It’

Game of Thrones and Eternals star Kit Harington has admitted he didn’t join the Marvel Cinematic Universe because his character was particularly different or interesting, but because “if Marvel calls, you gotta do it.”

Harington, who played the minor role of Dane Whitman in the 2021 film, told GQ he wasn’t drawn to the role itself but was seemingly pulled in by the opportunity and celebrity that accompanies an MCU film.

“I’m not gonna pretend I took that [role] because it was different and interesting,” Harington said. “If Marvel calls, you gotta do it.”

He essentially played the London-based love interest of Sersi, played by Gemma Chan, and only appeared in the film’s opening and closing scenes. But in typical Marvel fashion, an end credits scene promised a much more involved future for Whitman and Harington.

Looking to save Sersi from a giant alien called a Prime Celestial, Whitman dips into his family’s dark past by opening a cheeky chest marked with the inscription: “Death is my Reward.” In it is a sword wrapped in bloody bandages that appears to respond to him, setting up his role as the cursed Black Knight in the upcoming (and seemingly quite troubled) Blade film.

Harington said he’d be interested in returning to the MCU, but didn’t seem confident anything was in the works currently.

An Eternals sequel is unlikely itself, as not only did its own producer Nate Moore say it wasn’t a “must have,” but the film was released to middling reviews and a weak box office debut for Marvel standards.
