At Tokyo Game Show 2023, Microsoft announced Octopath Traveler 2 is finally coming to Xbox. Now, in a new interview, Microsoft has confirmed it has signed a deal with Square Enix to bring the role-playing game to Game Pass.
In an interview with Sarah Bond, Corporate Vice President at Xbox, published on Xbox Wire, Octopath Traveler 2 is mentioned alongside Sega’s Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name as coming soon to Xbox Game Pass.
Octopath Traveler 2 launched on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam in February this year. IGN’s Octopath Traveler 2 review returned a 7/10. We called it “a very enjoyable JRPG sequel that feels a little too safe and familiar”.
Microsoft has worked to improve relations with Square Enix after a number of the Japanese publisher’s games skipped Xbox. At Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest 2023, game director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) welcomed Xbox boss Phil Spencer onto the stage alongside Square Enix boss Takashi Kiryu to celebrate the announcement that Final Fantasy 14 is finally on its way to Xbox consoles after years of PlayStation console exclusivity. It seems likely more announcements for Square Enix games on Xbox are to come.
During the recent FTC v. Microsoft trial it emerged that Xbox had seriously considered buying Square Enix in 2019.
