Minecraft Movie Leak Reportedly Reveals Jack Black as Steve

The Minecraft movie has reportedly suffered a leak that reveals images of Jack Black as Steve.

Eurogamer reported on images from what looks like a document produced by Minecraft developer Mojang that allegedly hit social media by way of 4chan.

The images show the Super Mario Bros. Movie actor as iconic playable character Steve, bearded, wearing trademark blue shirt and jeans, and holding a blocky pickaxe. The images also show a Creeper, cuboid bee, and a cross-eyed pink sheep.

As Eurogamer noted, the images posted to X/Twitter were “removed in response to a report from the copyright holder,” suggesting they are legitimate. IGN has asked Minecraft owner Microsoft for comment.

Warning: potential spoilers for the Minecraft movie follow.

The images also include text that summarizes the Minecraft movie’s plot. We’re told Steve is captured by a villain called Malgosha and is then subject to a rescue mission by “four fresh visitors” to the Minecraft world.

Jack Black teased his role as Steve in the Minecraft movie in a video posted to social media in April. The actor posted a video on Instagram that opens with him singing a joyful rendition of the Double Rainbow song while filming a colorful arch in the sky. He then walks up to a trailer that belongs to Steve from the Minecraft movie and gives a tour of the interior, showing off images of the franchise’s blocky lead character.

Other actors said to be in the mix include Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge.

Black, of course, is no stranger to video game adaptations, having voiced Bowser in 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, for which he earned a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for his ode to Princess Peach. Black is also taking on the role of Claptrap in the upcoming Borderlands movie, which hits theaters this August. People will have to wait a little longer to (officially) see Black as Steve as the Minecraft movie has a release date of April 4, 2025.

Eurogamer pointed out that the Minecraft movie leak comes hot on the heels of criticism of Jack Black’s handling of the cancellation of Tenacious D’s world tour following his bandmate Kyle Gass’ on-stage comment about the assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump.
