Moana Is Getting a Surprise Sequel This November

The Walt Disney Company has announced that Moana 2 will be released in theaters on November 27, 2024.

Alongside the surprise announcement, Disney revealed a short teaser that sees Moana on a beach. We also hear Maui’s voice at the end.

“Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers,” The official description reads. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, Moana 2 opens in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024.”

We were also treated to a first-look image of Moana 2, and it features Moana, Maui, and others on a boat that is sailing next to a whale shark. As is evidenced by the looks of the animal and how Moana’s grandma appeared in a similar fashion as a manta ray, this also may be one of her ancestors.

Moana was released in 2016 and, in our review, we said, “Storywise, Moana perhaps isn’t breaking new ground and it’s not making as much of a notable statement as Disney’s last animated film, Zootopia, but that doesn’t stop it from being an easy recommendation. The film delivers the strong humor, well executed action, memorable music and lovable characters Disney has perfected in a delightful and lovely manner.”

Moana also made a big splash recently at Disney World’s Epcot as the Moana-inspired Journey of Water opened and and allows guests to “explore the wonders of water along a lush trail that’s fun for all ages.”
