Warner Bros. has announced that Mortal Kombat 2 is coming to theaters late next year. The sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat movie will land in IMAX on October 24, 2025.
Director Simon McQuoid is back on board for Mortal Kombat 2, which will be penned by Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater. The currently confirmed cast includes Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Damon Herriman, Tati Gabrielle, Martyn Ford, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanadat.
Rumblings about Mortal Kombat 2 started in 2022, with Slater attached to reports at the time. We also previously heard about The Boys’ Karl Urban cast to play Johnny Cage. Urban has also previously appeared in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the modern Star Trek movies, and Thor: Ragnarok. WWE’s The Miz publicly shared his hopes to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2, but he’s since thrown his support behind Urban, saying, “I think he’s going to do an amazing job as Johnny Cage, and you better believe I’m going to watch it.”
The first movie won its weekend debut at the box office in 2021, and was at the time the second-highest opening weekend debut since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We called 2021’s Mortal Kombat good in our review, saying, “In a spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles, this new take on the over-the-top story of the Mortal Kombat fighting games perhaps bites off a little more than it can chew by attempting what is essentially an origin story and an Avengers-esque superhero team-up all in one.”
