‘No, Unequivocally F***ing No’: Spider-Man Star Andrew Garfield Firmly Shuts Down Avengers: Doomsday Return Rumors

Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has given a firm response when asked whether he will appear in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday.

Speaking with GQ, Garfield was asked if either he or fellow Spidey veteran Tobey Maguire would appear in Avengers: Doomsday, following their team-up with current Spider-Man actor Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Despite previous attempts to misdirect fans, Garfield’s response to the question seemed pretty definitive: “No, unequivocally f***ing no,” the actor said. Case closed? Well, maybe. (Though it’s not like the actor hasn’t deliberately misdirected fans before.)

Ask Garfield about the subsequent Avengers: Secret Wars, though, and the actor has an answer that is… well, it’s less definitive, to say the least.

“See, what it is, is this a tell? Or what is it? You’ll find out!” Garfield told MTV when asked about his Secret Wars involvement this week. “Whatever response I’m having, is it exasperation? Is it? I don’t know. You’ll find out.”

Avengers: Doomsday is now just over a year from launch, and principal filming has now wrapped. Its huge cast includes members of the OG Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men, as well as Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Was Garfield’s Spidey really expected in this film? As of now, there’s no sign that even Tom Holland’s Spidey will be involved — and he has his own film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, out next year too.

But Avengers: Secret Wars feels like another matter. The epic conclusion of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, in which Garfield has already appeared, feels too good of an opportunity to pass up to get Garfield back in action for one big final send-off, as Marvel resets its multiverse.

That prospect is at least more likely than a third Amazing Spider-Man film. “It’s not happening and I don’t believe it ever will, but it’s sweet of you to want it to happen,” Garfield said of the prospect of him helming a third solo Spidey movie.

Avengers: Doomsday launches on December 18, 2026, with Garfield unequivocally not involved.
