Poltergeist TV Series Reportedly in Early Development at Amazon MGM Studios

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Poltergeist, the 1980s horror film franchise, is currently in early development at Amazon MGM Studios to be turned into a TV series.

In a Variety report, it was further revealed that no writers are attached to the project as of yet, but Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will serve as executive producers on behalf of Amblin Television. Having Amblin Television produce is fitting because it’s the same company that initially produced the first Poltergeist film that was released in 1982. Although not much is known about the upcoming series, it has been confirmed that it’ll be within the same world as the films.

It’s also worth mentioning that this isn’t the first time Poltergeist has been adapted into a series. During the late 1990s, Poltergeist: The Legacy originally aired on Showtime for its first three seasons. Then, it found a new home on the Sci-Fi Channel in 1999 for its fourth and final season. Poltergeist: The Legacy consisted of an ensemble cast known as The Legacy, who would battle forces of evil to protect humanity.

As for the original film, it’s gained a cult following since its release. According to the same Variety report, the movie earned roughly $121 million worldwide with a reported budget of $10.7 million. It was then nominated for three Academy Awards, which included Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Original Score. For a nice cherry on top, Poltergeist was ranked 14 on our list of best horror movies.
