Sam Raimi Pours Cold Water on Rumors That He’s Working on Spider-Man 4 With Tobey Maguire

Fans have been begging to know if Sam Raimi is returning to helm Spider-Man 4 starring Tobey Maguire, but the director says such a project isn’t currently in the cards.

Raimi spoke on the rumors during a WonderCon interview with CBR, bringing disappointing news for movie fans who have spent the last few years getting their hopes up. He says he’s definitely heard about rumors of both he and Maguire returning for Spider-Man 4 but isn’t sure Marvel would be interested considering the success they’ve seen with Tom Holland’s take on the character.

“I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet,” he said. “I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’ I’m not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.”

Interestingly, the Evil Dead director didn’t write off the possibility of taking on Spider-Man 4 completely. It sounds like more than a few conversations would need to take place to get things moving, though, especially considering Raimi hasn’t talked to Maguire about a potential return.

“I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures,” he added. “But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don’t know.”

Rumors of a long-awaited fourth Spider-Man movie from Raimi and Maguire have been swinging around for the last few years. The last movie from the superhero filmmaking partnership saw the release of Spider-Man 3 in May 2007. That means it’s been nearly 17 years since the 2000s version of Spidey took over New York City for his own film, but fans do have good reason for their newfound dreams.

While Maguire hasn’t starred as Spider-Man in a standalone film in a while, he did appear as the character in 2021’s crossover Blockbuster, Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was a cinematic dream come true for longtime comic book movie watcher, and it was proof that Maguire still had spider DNA coursing through his veins. Considering Raimi and Maguire have expressed in the past, it’s not unreasonable to assume Spider-Man 4 could eventually find its way to cinemas.

Alas, while Raimi’s long-lost Spider-Man 4 project was at one point in development, it sounds like it could be years before something materialized if at all. Until there’s more to share, be sure to read more about how the director feels about his Spider-Man movies and don’t forget that all eight Spidey flicks are coming back to cinemas soon. You should also catch up on the latest from Sandman actor Thomas Haden Church, who says that Marvel is interested in bringing his character back in the future.
