It’s been over a decade since we got a film in the Scary Movie franchise, but Paramount is finally planning a new installment.
The studio announced the news today during its CinemaCon presentation, also revealing that Neal H. Horitz – best known for his work on the Sonic the Hedgehog series, the Fast & Furious movies, and Prime Video’s The Boys – will be producing. Those are all the details we got, however, so we still don’t know if series mainstays like Anna Faris and Regina Hall are returning.
The franchise was developed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Marlon Wayans, with Shawn and Marlon Wayans also starring in the first two films. The first Scary Movie came out in 2000, primarily parodying horror movies like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. It would spawn four sequels that all satirized popular horror films like Saw, The Ring, and more.
The franchise saw decreased interest, however, by the time 2013’s Scary Movie 5 came around, which was the lowest-grossing movie in the series with just $78 million. That result would put the series on hold until now, and of course, there’s been all kinds of new horror movies and trends that have cropped up over the last decade.
The news of a new Scary Movie was only one of a number of announcements in a pretty jam-packed CinemaCon presentation. Elsewhere, the studio also revealed new details about its upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, confirmed a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie, and showed the first footage of Gladiator 2.
