The Black Phone Is Getting a Sequel in 2025

Blumhouse horror movie The Black Phone is getting a sequel, and it already has a release date.

Universal announced on Friday that The Black Phone 2 will release on June 27, 2025. While the studio didn’t reveal any information on casting or filmmakers who are attached, C. Robert Cargill, who co-wrote the original, shared the announcement on X/Twitter.

The Black Phone was directed and co-written by Sinister and Doctor Strange’s Scott Derrickson. Based on a 2004 short story by Joe Hill, it starred Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, a sadistic murderer who abducts a 13-year-old boy named Finney (Mason Thames). Trapped in a soundproof basement, Finney makes a grim discovery regarding a disconnected phone after it starts ringing (we won’t spoil anything else if you haven’t seen it yet).

The unique premise made for a hit for Blumhouse last year, which is releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s this weekend and specializes in low-budget horror with high profit margins. Per Box Office Mojo, The Black Phone made $161 million worldwide on a reported production budget of about $16 million, according to CNBC.

IGN gave it a 9/10, with Amelia Emberwing writing that it “mixes the supernatural with relatable horrors in ways that will leave you both terrified and hopeful.”

Today’s news continues to shape up a fairly busy 2025 for Blumhouse, having already announced a sequel to M3GAN for that year as well as The Exorcist: Deceiver, the second in its planned new The Exorcist trilogy that kicked off with Believer this month. Next up, it has Night Swim on Jan. 5, 2024, and Imaginary (which was teased with a mysterious, nearly audio-only trailer ahead of Five Nights at Freddy’s) on March 8, 2024.
