Tron: Ares Adds Gillian Anderson to Cast as Production Begins

Gillian Anderson has joined the cast of Tron: Ares, the third film of Disney’s resurrected sci-fi franchise.

According to Deadline, the award-winning star of The X-Files, The Crown, and Sex Education has joined the cast of Tron 3 in an undisclosed role alongside Jared Leto as Ares, a “fictional character who crosses over from the world of videogames to planet Earth” in an AI-centric plot written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.

The film also stars Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins. Character details are currently under wraps, though production on the movie has officially begun, with director Joachim Rønning announcing on Instagram that it’s “week one on the grid” as Tron: Ares finally moves forward.

The original announcement for Tron: Ares pegged it as a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy, but Disney cancelled it in 2015 following the box office failure of Tomorrowland. The film’s development restarted in 2017, but as a reboot rather than a sequel, with Garth Davis initially lined up to direct before Rønning stepped in.

Just as things started to click into place, Tron: Ares faced another setback in August 2023 with an indefinite delay amid the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Filming could not begin as planned, with cameras rolling several months on from the schedule. The movie is, however, slated to release in theaters sometime in 2025.
