Uncharted 2 Movie Officially in Development at Sony

Sony has confirmed Uncharted 2 is officially in development, though details about the movie sequel are scarce.

As reported by Variety, Sony Pictures executive Steven O’Dell confirmed the news during Sony’s presentation at the 2024 CineEurope trade show. He listed the sequel to the Tom Holland-starring Uncharted film adaptation as one of the studio’s upcoming projects, confirming that the movie is officially moving forward.

An Uncharted follow-up has been in discussed for a while, but this is the first time Sony has acknowledged it is happening. The first movie struck gold with a $139 million global box office opening weekend in 2022, leading Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman to call Uncharted “a new hit movie franchise for the company.”

Producer Charles Roven confirmed last year that the ship hadn’t sailed on the sequel and that he was “definitely looking” to make another Uncharted movie, continuing the adventures of Nathan Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Mark Wahlberg later revealed that Uncharted 2 had a script lined up and ready to go.

While there has been no confirmation of cast, Wahlberg let slip in February of this year that he got told to start growing a moustache in preparation for his role as Sully. “I just got a call today that they got the script in,” he shared, adding that they had said to “Start growing your moustache. It’s gonna take a while.”

The first Uncharted movie acted as more of a prequel to the Naughty Dog action-adventure series instead of a direct adaptation. However, Wahlberg showed up in the movie’s post-credits scene with a moustache, signalling that the cinematic adventures will transition into the period in which the video games take place.

Uncharted had an infamously troubled road to release, but the sequel looks to be finally getting off the ground.
