Adam Devine Says Marvel Ruined Comedy Films
Pitch Perfect star Adam Devine believes Marvel ruined comedy films because the latter’s budgets can’t compete with the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Marvels.
As reported by Deadline, Devine said on This Past Weekend with Theo Von that, while comedy series on TV are still good, the state of film comedy “kinda sucks”.
“I think Marvel ruined it. I feel like superhero movies kind of ruined comedies,” Devine said. “Because people go to the theatre and you expect to watch something that costs $200 million to make and comedy movies aren’t that.
“You’re like, ‘well, why would I spend the same amount of money to go watch a little comedy in the theatre if I could spend the same amount of money and go see something that is worth $200 million?’
“They still make those movies kinda funny,” he continued. “I mean they’re not comedies but they’re like, ‘oh my god is that raccoon talking? This is hilarious.’ Which it is, but it’s not like a real comedy.”
The talking raccoon is of course in reference to Rocket Raccoon, a star of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise helmed by now DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.
In our 8/10 review of the latest, which featured the talking raccoon as its true protagonist, IGN said: “The Guardians of the Galaxy deliver their swan song in Vol. 3 and it’s a rockin’ good time. Rocket’s tragic origins, great action and effects, and James Gunn’s soulful style send them out on an emotional high note.”
